Studio brief 4: Typeface research

As the idea is based on the concept of becoming an adult at university as you now have a lot more responsibilities and also freedom, I decided to base the publication on a newspaper as this in my opinion is one of the most 'adult' ways of reading. The typeface on each of the pages in the newspaper is important and will need to appeal to the freshers that have just joined LCA. I believe that a traditional typeface would not grab the attention of a student in the context that it would be placed in for this newspaper. This newspaper is aiming to be humorous and stylised to be fairly abstract so that the images of cleaning products become appropriate to be used as posters in student halls. The typefaces for the Daily Telegraph, The Times and the Guardian are all serif typefaces with quite high contrasting strokes. They are very different to the typeface chosen by the The Sun newspaper. The sun newspaper has a different age target audience and it is evident in the logo alone. the bright red and bold, italic white typeface is san-serif and works well to appeal to the age group it is aimed at. I think this style of typeface will suit my target audience much better than the more traditional typefaces used on the other newspapers. Figure 1 shows the various typefaces over the style of image that will be used in the final newspaper, it is clear that 'The Sun' is the style that works the best with it.

Figure 2 shows a typeface called Montserrat, a typeface which seems to be a more sophisticated and trendy version of 'The Sun's' logotype. When experimented with digitally (fig. 3), feedback was positive and it was agreed that this was a suitable typeface for the aesthetic that was being aimed for.
