Penguin: Romek Marber + Penguin

In 1961, Polish graphic designer Romek Marber conceived a grid layout for Penguin book covers. Originally, Penguin tended to favour simple typographic covers for the publications, Marber's designs were appreciated by the consultant art director, so he was asked to propose a new approach for Penguin's series of crime fiction novels.
The crime series was one of the most popular and recognisable series, so he kept the familiar green for the covers but made it slightly 'fresher'. Arranging the typographic information at the top third of the page, he allowed for over 2 thirds of the cover to be used by the illustration. This allowed the artwork to be the main element that captured the audience's attention. He has designed over 70 front covers in this style, as shown in figure 1.

The consistent design across all of the books allows for them to become more recognisable which is important.

I will need to decide on 3 books to re-design the covers for and then research the themes, concepts, colour schemes that are suitable, whether to present subjective or objective, and also design a timeline that fits in with the final designs.
