Study Task 4 is to create an A1 poster that folds into A4 so that I can promote the exhibition and be given to those visiting it. The background image must be of folded paper/card to form a sculptural object that is relevant to the exhibition. A grid layout must then be applied to the A1 poster as an overlay on the image, showing the relevant typographic information about the exhibition.
In response to Study Task 4, I looked at the exhibitions that are currently running or will be running at the V&A London and chose the one which I was most interested in. I have decided to design a poster for the exhibition called 'Undressed: A Brief History of Underwear'.
"It is an exhibition that explores the intimate relationship between underwear and fashion and its role in moulding the body to a fashionable ideal, with cut, fit, fabric and decoration revealing issues of gender, sex and morality."
Exhibition highlights
Corset, cotton, whalebone |
Close Trompe l'oeil corset dress |
Advertising poster designed by Hans Schleger |
Close 'Tamila' lingerie set from the Agent Provocateur Soirée collection |
The exhibition reflects the changing ideals of beauty through the decades, and how design can affect notions of sex and social morals. I think it would be interesting to focus my idea around the attraction of tension between two objects, reflecting the power of underwear on sexual relations.
