As the content for for the newspaper had been decided on, it was the layout that needed consideration. The layout will determine the whole newspaper's identity and will need to reflect Leeds College of Art, freshers, the # and be visually developed enough to act as a poster. Figure 1 shows sketches of some potential layouts on the page, showing how the image size could either be almost full bleed, or alternatively take up only a small proportion of the page. I explored the different ways in which I could get the title of the # to contrast with the background image. One way which I thought would be successful was to use a contrasting box to then place the white text in. This did create a contrast to the background and added more of the colour scheme into the final visual, but it didn't allow for the clean and minimal approach that I was aiming to have with the design of this publication.

Figure 2 shows the digital mock ups of these sketches using the colours based on the LCA website, but a pastel version of them. I started by having the image central on the page with a lot of white space surrounding it. This gave the minimal look I was aiming for, but when shown to others they suggested it may look better to take up more of the page. Research has shown that posters do not seem to include too much white space unless it is to illustrate a particular point. A newspaper also has a fairly full page the majority of the time, so with this in mind I have decided to continue the design developments to take up more of the page. The box of contrasting colour around the text does not add to the design in a positive way, so by removing that and having the text across the middle the design is improved.
