White Nights
Research into the original front cove of the book lead to the discovery that the 'W' had been changed to make it a feature on the design. I thought it would be interesting to take this and develop it so that it acts as an abstract visual. The sketches show how it could be stretched across the front and back of the book cover, still staying within the restraints of the Marber grid. The sketch also shows the idea to try out the use of negative space on the back cover, creating a contrast and allowing for the white text to be visible on the back.
Nonsense
The initial idea process started by taking the letters of the title and author and overlapping them until they look like a jumble of 'nonsense'. I like the idea of overlapping relevant symbols/characters to mean particular things.
The sketches show a variety of experiments of how this could be done. I think it is important to arrange it in such a way that it looks like a shape or pattern, rather than a collection of numbers and letters.
The limericks are made up of 5 lines, have a AABBA rhyming scheme, anapaestic meter and 1 stanza. I thought that I could take some of this information as the basis of the pattern generation.
Olalla
The initial sketches for the Olalla book cover design was based on the mountains in which the story is set in. This could be developed through the use of colours that are in the sunset that the book was named after. It could also be developed in a way that the gothic element of the story is reflected.
