Summary
Takes its title from the long twilight periods that last nearly until midnight in Northern lands and some parts of Russia.The narrator meets a young well-dressed girl leaning against an embankment. An older man approaches her and this scares her, so she begins to run and the narrator sets him back and offers the girls comfort. They promise to meet the next night. On the second night she asks him to tell her the whole history of his life.

Summary
1st person story by a nameless English soldier who is recovering from his wounds in a Spanish hospital. He was placed with a local family and he describes the simple pleasure of their company. The daughter of the family is called 'Olalla'. The soldier falls in love with her, and she with him. He cuts his wrist on some glass and the mother immediately bites his arm. Olalla separates them and tends to the wounds. They meet the next day and decide to go separate ways. He looks back to see her at the foot of the cross.
