Burnout - Evaluation

As such a broad research topic, the factor that influenced the overall concept and design approach varied at the beginning of the process. This was a useful factor, allowing for a large amount of experimentation with the visual style but also with the refinement of what the intended message actually was aiming to be. The project concept started with the idea that the 15-degree head tilt would drive the design outcomes and although this would have been an interesting concept to explore, the reference to the open tabs really worked with the research that I had conducted.

The research was predominantly on digital reliance and also how we try to multi-task as a means of productivity, which is actually shown to be counterproductive as our focus is lost each time we switch between the stimuli. The projects process and outcomes shows to explore the topic from a cultural, psychological and medical perspective; delivering a fairly serious and current topic in a more positive light, tapping into the aesthetic style that the target audience would engage well with.

The video was made with the intention to be played in places such as the cinema, just before the film starts as a way of demonstrating how people are feeling guilty about having downtime – but with the intention of then showing it to be productive in its own sense and a vital element of someone’s personal development.

I would like to take this project and develop it further after uni, using my travels to photograph people on phones and how maybe people just cannot switch off even to enjoy a holiday/new country. The country could feed into the aesthetic and the typeface and zine aesthetic could be adapted to represent accordingly

The ability to talk to Charlie Sheppard at the point before the main development of this project was really valuable as his professional outlook allowed me to think about outcomes that I may not have instantly seen to be relevant. As typeface design is not the graphic discipline that I have had much experience in it was advised to take the typeface manipulation and not have this the main focus of the project. The typeface design communicates what was intended, but the simple format of each of the letters has now allowed for the transference across a number of different medias to allow for a large and consistently designed campaign.
