Synaesthesia: Critical feedback

I presented the idea of an augmented reality magazine/book which explores the impact that synesthesia has on Graphic design as a subject, or to the actual Graphic designer. The content would evolve around the idea of perfectly thought out design, with focus on the rules and combinations that have to be considered when designing for print/screen, but then how someone with synesthesia will see it in a completely new light to what is intended. This is a topic that is of interest and relevance to what I am studying because we are taught the different strategies within Graphic Design and then to think that it becomes distorted by other peoples perceptions, is something that we may not understand.

Idea:
The magazine would have content such as alphabets, colour systems, geometric illustrations, layouts etc. which would all be placed with extreme consideration in terms of harmony and balance. This would then all be manipulated to repesent how someone with synesthesia may see this content through the use of augmented reality. The audience would hold a device up to the design in the magazine and then the superimposed manipulation would come onto the screen as if it was appearing on the magazine page in real time.

Inspiration:

Feedback:
  • move away from the specific topic and concentrate on informing
  • it was made evident that there was confusion within the group I was presenting to
  • visually repesent and educate the audience
  • 'information is beautiful' as a visual reference
  • collate it all to show and help auidence to understand as it was when giving examples that people started to understand what synesthesia is
  • categorise the content with explanations, body of research and then found imagery/artwork
  • wreck this journal as inspiration to make the publication engaging, resulting in more chance of the audience learning
(Each person in the feedback session wrote on a post it note the different considerations that I could make in relation to what we had discussed.)
1.
  • virtual reality?
  • experiment with person with synesthesia as a case study
  • visually communicating what the 6 types are
  • look into theories as to why it happens
2.
  • look into maybe asking people to listen to something and say what colour they see and compare
  • could be done tofind if you do haveit and how to diagnose it
3.
  • look at colour blind books
  • creation of a zine series of the different types - design a box/sleeve to keep them all in
4.
  • animation of the relationship between colour and music
  • where would it be placed? - museums, universities, cafes
  • educational purpose?
  • look at Björk's app - Biophilia
5.
  • communicate easily how to educate people
  • visual representation
  • motion graphics
6.
  • magic book (colouring idea)
  • who is the key audience?
  • interview people with it
  • bring awareness to what it actually is
  • what's the purpose - educate
  • 'information is beautiful'
  • trah with visual examples
  • a 'point of view' approach to introduce people and their experiences
