Studio Brief 2: Ideas

Idea generation
Initial sketches

I started by listing the meanings of 'unorthodox' so that I could use the as prompts throughout this exercise. The drawings were restricted to 30 seconds in and had to be based within a small square grid. The patterns were created to illustrate the word's meaning and visually represent the characteristics associated with it. This was a good starting point to then be able to apply these principles to the letter 'A'. The different ideas generated all show an adaptation to the serifs, the x-height or the general structure of the letter. Another approach was to include a pattern inside the letterform to illustrate the meaning of 'unorthodox'.

In response to this studio task of idea generation, I sketched a few different ideas that could be developed further later in the project. I like the very skeletal letterform with the thick slab-serifs at the end. This adds a modern twist to the traditional use of serifs.
