Studio Brief 2: Development solution and research behind it

'Lo Siento' is a small studio based in Barcelona that focuses on the whole concept behind identity projects and approaches them in a very interesting way. The main feature is an organic and physical approach to the solutions.

The 'Cava Typography' project was of interest to me because the designers took an object very obviously related to Cava and created a new typeface. The website is particularly interesting because the photos of the process are shown so that the stages to get to the final design can be understood. Keeping the one twisted section of the wire to form the main letterform works well as it makes it very obvious which context the idea has been developed from. The sketches of the designs are a good way to plan out development. It is clear that the same letter is repeatedly drawn until it is perfected.

The research into 'Lo Siento' graphic design studios allowed me to realise that I needed to create a contextualised rule for my typeface. The typeface needed to be an unorthodox version of 'Baskerville', so I would need to take the tradition and do something different to it. Leading on from the alphabet I created based on the negative spacing around the letters; I thought about creating 3D models of the Baskerville typeface using them to create the shadows that would form the bespoke typeface.

To achieve the shadows I had to individually cut out each letter in card and then attach form board to it so that it was raised off of the table surface. The raised letter could then be placed in front of a light so that a shadow could be cast. This letter with the shadow will then be photographed so that the shadow can be drawn out to form the bespoke typeface.

The original Baskerville letter will be removed and the shadow will be what is left to form the typeface. The lamp will be placed in the same place, to ensure a consistent design throughout the alphabet.
