Design for screen - Artist Research and Visual Inspiration

Artist Research

Tobias van Schneider - Authentic Weather

Tobias is an award-winning Graphic Designer born in Germany, raised in Austria and currently living in New York City. 'Multi-disciplinary maker of useful, curious and beautiful things'. His current job is working as the Art Director & Lead Product Designer at Spotify in New York.

Also worked for:
  • Red Bull
  • Google
  • BMW
  • Wacom
  • Sony
  • Fantasy Interactive
  • Toyota
  • Ralph Lauren

The work that interested me was the 'Authentic Weather' application that he designed, a simple design with a lot of humour and insulting the repetitive answers found on common weather apps. It is another weather app with the sole purpose to get it to the point and communicate the only and most important fact about the weather. The app is said to be a little moody, but i a humorous way. Tobias also aimed to show designers that Akzidenz-Grotesk is the more beautiful version of Helvetica.

I like the white background as it allows the user to focus more on the app content rather than the design. This is something that may be applied to my app design as the main focus is the efficiency that the user has when keeping up to date with creative news articles. The gestures make the app

very easy for the user to interact with, allowing them easy acess to share the weather update, check for other days forecasts and then also by pinching the screen the user can see the temperature flash up until they let go.

Daniel Klopper - Flat Design

Daniel Klopper is a professional interface and product designer working as part of the team Over. He specialises in interface design, mobile UI, UX and product design with the outcomes often designed to have flat colours, harsh boxes, modern and artistic style, and shadowing. The 'Unsplash' App has a colour scheme of pastel colours and a clean white background. The flat colours in this design paired with the shadows behind the profile icon add depth to the design, optimising its appearance on screen. The use of shadows is something that I will need to explore when designing my app, as the element of depth works well in screen design in my own opinion.
