OUGD505 - Appropriation

Appropriation in art is the use of pre-existing objects or images with little or no transformation applied to them. The use of appropriation has played a significant role in the history of the arts (literary, visual, musical and performing arts).

Appropriation in fine art ...
To question authorship and authencitiy
To question what art is or can be
To investigate process and making
To question the value and meaning of mass culture

Cultural appropriation ...

Edward Said - 'Orientalism'
Fetisation of other cultures by the West that may look like appreciation on the outside but it is actually disabling these positions and suggesting that Westerners are superior.

Parody in Art is a work created to mock, comment on, or poke fun at an original work, its subject, author, style, or some other target, by means of humorous, satiric or ironic imitation.
Banksy
Ad Busters
Bonny and Clyde

pastiche is a work of visual art, literature, theatre, or music that imitates the style or character of the work of one or more other artists. Unlike parody, pastiche celebrates, rather than mocks, the work it imitates.
Stranger Things - looks like Star Wars identity
Stranger & Stranger - packaging for Ludlow Blunt

Task:
produce work that is informed by the current exploration of appropriation, pastiche and parody

I liked the Spoofs of Absolut vodka advertisements by AdBusters, so I had a look at some of the other alcohol adverts to see if there were any that stood out to me.

I thought that the short slogan on this advertisement could be played with in order to create a parody of this. Gin is often know for its depressive tendencies that it can provoke and bring to the surfaces. So i thought that I could use the letter g to try and swap this for a word related to the negative emotions that often come from drinking gin. I began brainstorming and then it lead to 'the G in G + Tears' which worked well to illustrate what I was trying to say.

Final outcome:
