Collaboration: Initial compositions

As the zine will be based on the final design of the photo book, the initial sketches focus on picture placement and the ways in which the text could be added as part of the body of work.

1. Columns
Kristina's photography is very journalism focused and looks at the current issues in the area that she is shooting.  This initial idea takes the idea of column writing and applies this to the visual design of the photo book and zine. The idea was to have  column which takes up 1 3rd of the page as a singular column of text, printed on newsprint rather than the satin that the photos will be on to make it stand out. The portrait of the interviewee would be presented in the landscape style (fig.1) and then the column of writing would be part of the binding so that on each of the portraits that needed writing it would be present. Figure 2 shows how this would look if the image was a full bleed portrait, but we are not sure if there will be portraits of if it will be a collections of only landscapes. To represent this idea on the outside of the photo book and zine it could be incorporated as part of the spine as shown in figure 3. This could be the same width as the writing within the book and could have the title 'Out of sight, out of mind' so that a full bleed image could then be revealed when it is lifted up. The colour of this could be a colour that is swatched from the image that we choose as the front cover. The binding of the final book would be something that would need to be taken into consideration if this idea was to be taken forward because pagination would need to be considered so that the extras page inserts match up to the portraits of the interviewees. Perfect binding singular pages would allow for the sequencing within the book to have a lot of flexibility as the columns could be added at whichever point is necessary.

 2. Isolation
When in Bali, it became very apparent that it was isolation that seemed to be something commonly discussed and witnessed. The inequality and struggle within the Hamlets could be influenced by this isolation in terms of finding it hard to find work and get enough food easily. This idea of isolation could be shown metaphorically by the layout shown in figure 4. It uses the white space to isolate the image to either a double page spread on its own or alongside a complimentary image. Some images that either show the isolation the most or have more than one person in could be presented as a double page spread or to fill more of both of the pages. This is something that could be developed if this was the idea that was taken forward.

3. Visually descriptive
Another approach would be to rely on image pairing/grouping to tell the audience more and more about the story, issue and message that is being captured through the imagery. Whilst mainly focusing on the portraits, Kristina has also captured some metaphorical objects which when placed with the portraits could be used to uncover more about Bali and the lives of those in the images.
