Whist Kristina was away it was becoming difficult to express our ideas over message, so we decided to face time so that I could really get going with the designing but with the reassurance that we were on the same wavelength.
We discussed the fact that the two bodies of photography work that she had been working on would actually work better in separate publications. So we have decided to concentrate on the Bali project because it has a big message that needs to be shared and explored. Whilst producing the images, Kristina has been able to get a bigger understanding on the inequality that she felt existed in Bali. Interviews with the local people has shown that they do not see the difference in genders and the expectations as something to be alarmed about. The zine will be exploring this idea and educating those within the Western community about the differences within Bali and how initial impressions are actually very inaccurate.
The zine will have a number of metaphorical object images which have been captured to highlight the insignificance that they may have to us and how initially we see them to be irrelevant, but actually they show the isolation of the Balinese people to the tourists that visit their home island.
Content
- metaphorical objects
- 9 individual portraits (landscape) with names, interviews, age and location
- extra individual portraits but without the interviews
I shared some of the different approaches I had thought about going in terms of content sequencing and visual style.
Metaphorical objects:
- integrated in between the portraits of the women to metaphorically build up more information about their environment and Bali as a place
- metaphorical objects at the beginning with lots of white space to show the isolation and also make the audience question their importance in terms of the message that the zine is presenting
Portraits:
- in the style of Petra Collins' Coming of Age book, an image per page placed at the top with the details of the person in small underneath
- the interviews could come alongside the images, either underneath of set to the right
- the image could be almost full bleed on the left page and going over onto the right slightly to leave a blank column for the writing - allows audience to focus on their own impressions of the woman and then the story comes after to get her opinion on the inequality issue
- the portraits could all be presented in a stylised way throughout the zine with only the small details such as the name etc. and then a reference to the interview because that could be at the back of the zine
- maybe only have the portraits that have an interview to go with them as full bleed and the ones with only the name have more white space to shown this element of unknown and the idea that the audience will still need to think up their own opinions and ideas about this woman as an individual
Interviews:
- it seems as though the interviews have taken on a bit of a documentation format, suggesting that they may work well presented in a more formal manner
- could be placed under the photos or to the right of them in a fairly small type, maybe in columns
- could change stock and have at the back of the zine on a newspaper print stock with referencing to the images that have been presented at the start of the zine
- this will be an informative way of doing it and it means that the audience can pick and choose which parts they would like to read, increasing user engagement and overall education on the subject
Typography:
- mixture of sans serif and serif typeface to represent these traditions within Bali but how they are now being brought into a 21st century light, it represents the battle between what we see to be an issue in comparison to what the Balinese see to be normal
Stock:
- Kristina suggested that because the images have a large amount of black they would not print very well onto matte paper, the best stock would be satin or gloss
- stock would need to be a consideration in terms of production and costs because of it being informative it will need to be cheap enough to print in large quantities
- the interviews and comments from the organisation in Bali could be a presented in a journalistic way, printed onto a news stock in columns at the back of the zine
- the use of different stock for the writing would be an engaging and effective way to make it stand out against the photography
- depending on the binding method used, the front/back cover would either be the same stock as the inside pages for a stitch/staple bind or a thicker stock if it is perfect bound
- it seems as though we are keen to have some of the main images on a nice stock with the pages perforated so that they can be ripped out by the user and used as a postcard style print - something that is on trend and would engage the target audience
Binding:
- the preferred method of binding would be pamphlet binding, but if the zine ends up being too many pages for this method than it is likely that perfect binding would have to be the chosen method
- research showed that photography books are engaged with better when they can be opened flat or as close to flat as possible, something that methods such as Japanese binding wouldn't allow for
