Research into the Rainbow Flag as a symbol of Pride lead me to find out that each colour has a meaning or association. This could be something that influences the order in which I present the information in the book, trying to match the sections to the particular colours and their meanings.
The pride flag has actually been reduced down to 6 colours rather than 8, leaving me with the categories of life, healing, sunlight, nature, magic/arts and spirit. The author has said that the order in which the sections are presented does not affect the content so this will allow me to match it to suit the rainbow.
The section titles I have to include:
- Intro
- UK Pride
- UK Club Scene
- UK Media
- UK Gay Art
There are 5 sections as part of the content for the book, so in order to suit my design decision of making it match the colours of the rainbows I have decided to add an illustrations sections. This section will be a collection of artwork from illustrators who are part of the lgbt+ community, or do artwork expressing the community.
LIFE: Intro
Why? The brief overview of the history and general community will reflect on the ways n which the lives have been affected and how they are now different today.
HEALING: Pride
Why? The event of Pride could be seen to be a healing process for the damage that the negative opinions of the community have caused and the event in itself could be a way in which the community comes together to realise that everything is now accepted.
SUNLIGHT: Club Scene
Why? The truth in that the club scene often leads to a night out ending when the sunlight comes back in the morning.
NATURE: Media
Why? It is in our nature to be influenced by the media and the things that are published on particular topics of interest.
MAGIC/ARTS: Gay Art
Why? It is the art section, so fits well.
SPIRIT: Illustrations
Why? The spirit of the community or the individual artist is reflected through the illustrations, colour schemes and messages that are trying to be shared.
Below are the design scamps for the rainbow content dividers, based on the flag well-known to Pride. The idea is to use acetate at the start of each section and gradually build up the rainbow as the sections go on through the book.
