The word ambivalent means to have mixed feelings or contradictory ideas about something or someone. I created this pattern which randomly followed the lines of the aicher grid, with no actual rule in mind. This represents the idea of contradicting by not following one set rule or path. I wanted to develop a supergraphic that could stand for a direction or a particular sign and be presented in a very large pace, but not been seen as art.

The research into the line taught me that the line is often associated with movement, something that a sign/symbol normally causes people to do as a response.

After realising that the line represents movement, I decided to develop this pattern into a way of directing people either left or right etc. I started by filling in all of the gaps that created triangles to see what kind of visual outcome this created. I liked the idea that if all of the triangles were to point in the same direction then they could represent the direction in which the pedestrian needed to follow.

The slightly thinner lines and then the block filled triangular shapes in development 3 very clearly represent the fact that the system is trying to represent 'left' and not right. The supergraphic will work in any context as it can be cropped, enlarged or made into any shape to fit the space that it is required in. The colours of the arrows could also be changed so that they suit the colour scheme of the selected location, or to act as a contrast.
